School Construction Projects
The City of Norwalk and Norwalk Public Schools have embarked on an aggressive long-range facilities improvement plan, that is being managed by the Norwalk Facilities Construction Commission (NFCC). The NFCC serves as the permanent "School Building Committee". Under this program the construction of Brien McMahon High School and Kendall Elementary School are already underway, and projects at each of the rest of Norwalk’s public schools are either in the design or planning stages. These projects will help prepare all 19 Norwalk Schools for the 21st century.

The Norwalk Public Schools are comprised of three high schools, four middle schools and twelve elementary schools that total over 1.6M square feet of space. At today’s replacement cost, that represents an asset of more than $400M dollars.

In order to protect the City’s assets, the City has embarked on an ambitious but financially responsible, long-range plan to upgrade and improve all 19 schools. In addition to the $15M renovation and additions at Brookside Elementary, $11M in district wide school re-roofing projects, and $74M renovation and additions to Brien McMahon High School, we have authorized approximately $70M of City funds to be spent on future improvements to our other schools.

State Department of Education reimbursement of eligible school construction costs are anticipated to provide an additional $25M to the City for a total program of over $195M.
