Project Information

Brien McMahon High School is the largest of the current capital projects underway, and represents the largest single construction project in the City’s history. The total combined cost is estimated at almost $74 million, however with reimbursement by the State Department of Education, the cost to the City of Norwalk for the project is estimated to be $46,670,000, and was filed with OSF as a "like new renovation project".

This project is unique in the State of Connecticut, in that the new Brien McMahon houses the Center for Global Studies Magnet School, as a "school within a school". This inter-district magnet school program involves over 24,000 square feet of the first floor of the new addition, with its own distinct entrance at the south end of the building. This magnet school portion of the project will be reimbursed 100% by the State – estimated at $6.5 million.

The project broke ground in September 2003, and is scheduled for completion in August of 2006. The project is being performed in 3 main phases. The first phase was the construction of the new 120,000 addition in the rear of the building. This first phase represents almost $30 million worth of the overall $74 million building project, and was completed on time (opened in February 2005), and on budget.

Phase 2 of the project began next, and many students and staff were relocated from the north half of the existing building, into the new addition and 12 temporary classrooms located in the front of the school. This phase involves the complete renovation of the north half of the existing school, scheduled to be complete in winter 2005/ 2006. Phase 3 (the remaining south portion of the building) is scheduled to be complete in the summer of 2006.
