The South Norwalk Branch Library project consists of a three-story masonry structure with approximately 11,057 sf of existing floor area and an addition of 3077 sf. The overall project budget is $4,231,446. The project funding is broken down as follows: City of Norwalk $1,881,446, Second taxing District $1,850,000, Grant from the CT State Library $500,000.

The scope of this project includes the addition of a three-story stair tower and elevator on the west side of the building and a two-story stair tower on the east side, using poured concrete foundations, structural steel frame, and masonry exterior skin. The addition to the lower level, first, and second floors and the renovations to the existing building will require extensive structural modifications to the existing structure.

The renovations at the lower level consist of renovations to the existing children’s library, storage, and mechanical rooms into a circulation desk area, a reading area, a work area, a children’s computer area, an activity area, a storage/data room, a new mechanical room, and a single room toilet facility.

The renovations at the main level include the staff office, a new circulation desk, the renovation of the existing director’s office into a new young adult reading/work area, new rest room facilities, and new lobby area in the west addition.

The renovations to the second floor will consist of access to new egress stairs, new restroom facilities, and renovations to the existing staff lounge.

New restroom facilities will be provided on all three floors as part of the new addition on the West side.

In addition to the above, the existing original front stair will be restored, a portion of the existing roof will be replaced, approximately 60% of the existing windows will be replaced, exterior masonry will be restored, all interior spaces will receive new finishes, and new furniture will be provided throughout. Hazardous material removal will be required at various locations.

The renovations also consist of the removal of existing and provision of new mechanical, electrical, plumbing systems. A new sprinkler system will also be installed.

As part of site renovations, this facility will have a new parking area for 22 cars, new concrete sidewalks, new exterior lighting, new landscaping and exterior furnishings
